The Man in Black was first published in London by Cassell, 1894, and in New York by Longmans Green in 1901, with twelve illustration by Wal and H. M. Paget. It is set in 1637, about 50 years after
A Gentleman of France, 30 years after
Memoirs of a Minister of France, 7 years after
Under the Red Robe, and 150 years before
The Red Cockade. There are cameo appearances by Louis XIII and Cardinal Richelieu, but this is not a swashbuckler. It is a spooky tale, with the title character an astrologer who preys on an innocent young woman, her long lost young brother, and her would-be murdering husband.
