Maybe I'm lucky, but that's worked through seven cats and 20+ years. My last remaining cat prefers regular carpet pile, so she's pretty easy to accommodate with virtually any commercial scratching post.

You do sound very lucky, or maybe your cats are very smart

Despite having three scratch pads around the house, mine prefers the heavy furniture that doesn't move
@kennyc - I don't think I'd be able to read in that chair for any length of time!
Any new chair that I buy will have to have firm back support and allow opening of the hip angle - I spend too much time in a desk chair and I need to stretch out!
