That's a pity. There has been mention of differences in selection for Japanese. But, I haven't paid that much attention.
What type of book are you reading? If it was an epub, it might be worthwhile testing a kepub. Kepubs use a different renderer. It is supposed to handle Japanese better than the epub renderer. It might handle the selection better as well.
You might also want to have a look at the posts by tshering. He has done a lot of work on the dictionaries including Japanese.
