The Kindle can be charged on a notebook USB-port, but it will be slow as the port will only provide 500 mA. My Nexus 4 will also charge... but it'll take a full day or so.
A 2A power adapter is highly recommended. Most devices cap out at 1A or 1.2A, so they don't charge faster with a more powerful charger, but the ones that can draw so much power to charge (such as the Nexus 4) will benefit from it.
