If I am going on a trip I'm not going to take something that nags at me. I am going to take a eReader that works well without WiFi.

When I am away from my house, I have airplane mode on all the time and have never received messages about WiFi being off.
I don't understand what messages you are getting. I have never received a single message.
Maybe some setting controls this. Both of my units are paid not to show ads. Maybe those, which show ads, get the messages.
