I think part of the problem is what you choose in the dropdown when you buy the book at Amazon. It defaults to "send to your xyz (main) device". If you want to download and load them only when you want them, you have to choose the option to download via the computer to keep it from automatically trying to push it down when you turn on the WiFi.
It would be nice if you could make "download via USB" as the first choice, but I haven't seen an option for that anywhere.
I had to remove both the Nook and Kindle apps from my phone because they both seemed to want to download every flippin' ebook I have. The phone definitely doesn't have the memory for that!
