Yep, I couldnt agree with you more!
Thank you to everyone who has replied. I have asked about this on another forum as well and going by all the replies received and my own attempts, there really doesnt seem to be any possible way to get the book off my tablet.
My laptop simply cannot see the file, no matter where I move it to on my tablet or what I rename it. As far as my laptop is concerned the file just does not exist. And if I cant get it onto the laptop, then I cant do anything further to the file.
Kudos to Kobo for managing to create a truly locked file.
When I first bought it and realised it was only available for a tablet I did ask Kobo for a refund but they said no as they reckoned I had already read it. At that stage I hadnt even worked out how to get it onto my tablet so I most certainly had not read it at all but they wouldnt listen.
*Update*
I finally found a way to get it off my tablet and onto my laptop. I zipped the whole Kobo folder on my tablet and added it to Dropbox and then downloaded it to my laptop via Dropbox.
However none of the files inside the folder are anything like a regular epub file and Calibre cant read any of them. I tried just importing the whole zip folder into Calibre and it did load it but there was nothing readable about it, it was all just random symbols and letters.
And so my quest continues. I will not be defeated!
