"Teach" is the most commonly used spelling of Blackbeard's surname today, but only because it was the one used by Captain Charles Johnson, the pseudonymous author of an eighteenth-century book on piracy that was a major influence on the popular image of the pirate. "Thatch" and variant spellings are actually more common in the contemporary documents relating to Blackbeard, and as such arguably more correct, though it's unlikely we'll ever know for sure which, if either, was his real name.
