First, I think there are a lot of people who *don't* know about the Kobo discount codes and just pay full price.
Second, they may be betting on the rule of large numbers. Even if they make $0.50 or $1 (on average) on each book, they'll make a huge amount of money if they sell 50 million books.

Samsung is selling 64 million smartphones a year, and they cost a pretty penny compared to an ebook, so I see a vendor selling 50 mln ebooks as fully possible.
