I do not think ePub 2.0 supports variables used as values in SVG and entities are gone in ePub 3.0 I believe. I think a cut and paste is the best way to create an insert SVG image. It really doesn't matter if this sort of thing is displayed properly in Sigil by the way. A Test in ADE is much better for this sort of thing.
