I don't know what advantage it will be to have a "Google Play" edition tablet vs. a non-"Google Play" tablet.
The "Google Play Edition" is a pure version of Android, without the ugly skin LG adds on top. It also comes free of any bloatware, and comes with the latest version of Android. It is also supposed to receive updates much sooner.

For the Google edition phones (S4, HTC One), it is possible to convert a non-Google edition phone into a Google edition one, so it might be possible to do the same with the G-Pad. Once the factory images for the G-Pad are up (if they're not already), the folks at XDA will certainly give it a shot.
