Waiting for a reliable computer is a good idea. OTOH, the worst I've managed from a bad patch was having to factory reset the Kobo -- experimenting with patching new firmware before Metazoa does a release is fun but done at your own risk. The factory reset is a bit of a pain but not something I don't do fairly often anyways.

Sounds like you have the same symptoms I saw when using Windows XP. I would attempt to copy a large block of data, it would error out and the Kobo's mounted drives would disappear.
