What type of books do you read? Where do you live?
To me, what you will read is as important as the device itself. For instance, if you like and read IT related books and live in USA, you may be better with a Kindle Paper White, as Amazon has probably the largest and better online store for IT related books. So it will be easier to buy, download and read, without having to use Calibre or remove DRM from the ebook.
Where you live is also key. If you live in Europe, and not in USA, you probably should buy an ereader that gives support locally. eReaders can fail. So you don't want to end in a situation that shipping back the ereader will cost you as much or more than what you initially paid.
Having said that, I personally like the Kindle Paper White 2nd generation. (own the PW1 one as well) While it's not perfect, the integrated light is very even and barely uses extra battery. Amazon customer support is great and the overall ereader's response when navigating and touching the screen is ok.
Last but not least, and this applies to any eink device out there, be aware of some "blinking" when turning pages. On some devices is every 4 to 8 pages, others is on every page. That's totally normal to any eink device. Some ghosting (barely see what was being displayed before, but barely) it's also common, especially when you do not refresh every page.
But if you are an avid reader you won't be disappointed if you get an eink device, regardless of the brand. I still believe eink devices provide the best reading experience and battery life, better than any LCD tablet currently in the market.
