There are user generated modifications to the kpg.conf to generate a 3.1.0 version for several of the options. Check the Kobo Patcher thread https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=220171 for more details on this.

As for patching software to make it behave the way the user wants? That's a fairly long and honourable tradition.
