Those are valid points, Hans, and I might yet upgrade to 8.1. But too many friends (particularly a producer I work with) have insisted that, for my uses, Windows 8 is inadvisable at this stage.

I seem to have been unclear about the hardware involved.

My Windows 7 machine is a "modern PC" in the sense that it's fast (or was as of 2012). It's my netbook that is the throwback, and the only reason it's running XP is because that iteration is lighter and therefore more compatible with the deliberately under-spec'd processor.
