It sounds like a corrupted database I would do what Becky recommended and clear the Kindle app data however you need to explain why type of books you are putting on it.

I have a new Fire. It does not let me search book content unless I've got the book open. And then there's a progress meter to watch while it searches and builds search results. Hence my conclusion there is no content index.
What am I missing?
Note I am talking about content within the book, not content (items) on the device. There probably is an index for that, as I alluded to.
