It was bought in the UK, Kiltas mentioned in an earlier post it was purchased from WH Smith.
If I were you I'd keep chasing them up and demanding either a replacement or refund. You could also go back to WH Smith and see what they say about it (although I believe they have to go through Kobo so they might not be much better).
If you paid for it by credit card, contact your credit card provider and see if you can get a refund via them. Unless Kobo can prove it is screen damage from being dropped or something, then I'd chase a refund via my credit card company stating the product you have bought is clearly not fit for purpose. If it's not due to accidental damage or careless handling on your part, then it should last more than a year.
