Amazon doesn't do this out of the kindness of their heart but out of basic self interest: a strong indie publishing sector is Amazon's best protection against the BPH cartel. Why would they turn around and squeeze them out when they are an increasingly important part of their business?

true overall. Amazon.com (US) also supports multi vendors in many product areas. Prices are good in general, as is support. Amazon.ca is a bit different. The prices for merchandise are often 2-3 times regular retail. And the selection is much poorer, which is probably to be expected.
xanthe kindly pointed out a special on Amazon.com for 14.99 but the shipping was $67. Amazon.ca base price was $47 but included free shipping. I was able to buy it at Staples for $19.99
I buy occasionally from Amazon.com when that is the only place I can get something. I do expect to pay double the American price though.
