As alluded to above, Kindle for iOS has a very good VoiceOver implementation. You can use this to read out text. There is a bit of a learning curve but it works pretty well. And in the process you can learn how to operate your iOS device with your eyes closed. It is kind of surprising how few apps support VoiceOver, however.
