Besides, if it's just a cable, what benefit do different sized ends have? Why would there be a need for a predefined direction.

A larger connector, at the host end, where there's generally a lot more physical space than at the client end, makes it easier to plug in, especially for those whose fingers are not so nimble as others. Tiny connectors are not easy for some people to manage.
