Has someone tried that?

Going by packet captures from Wireshark, the information sent seems to include affiliate, serial number (implying device type), current firmware version and Ghod alone knows what else. Geographic location in my limited testing does not seem to make any difference. The Kobo server processes the information and either responds with the download link for the new firmware or that no new firmware is currently available. Note that it is not enough that the firmware is newer than your current firmware -- a Glo on firmware 3.0.1 did not receive the 3.1.0 update but the same Glo after a factory reset to 2.1.2 did receive the update -- possibly since the factory reset meant a firmware package needed to downloaded in any event.
I do fiddle enough with my Kobo ereaders that factory resets are quite common which is possibly why I tend to get firmware updates fairly early in the cycle. Being in Canada might be another item in my favour as well.
