I wouldn't say that the Hunger Games was a rip off of Battle Royale. While they might both be about teenagers fighting to the death, the feel and actual premise are totally different. You might as well say that both books are rip offs of the movie the Running man. The basic concept has been around since before Roman times and is the subject of a lot of movies and video games (mortal kombat anyone?)

Ultimately the Hunger Games is about revolt against oppression, Battle Royale? Not so much.
