Amundsen nådde til slutt sitt årelange mål, og ble sammen med sin trofaste følgesvenn Oscar Wisting de første mennesker som besøkte begge jordens poler. Denne gangen ikke ved en månederslang sledetur, men med noen få døgns ferd i et luftskip over ishavet.
