Rebecca I believe you're misunderstanding how borrowing from libraries works. Yes, popular books will have a waitlist just like borrowing a hard copy book. That's normal and to be expected with popular books. But you don't have only 3 days to read the book. You have 3 days from when you receive the email to download the book you've waited for. If you don't sign into your local library to download it then the book will go to the next person on the list.
Once you download it to your reader you have anywhere from 1 to 3 weeks to read it. It depends on what your library offers and what you've selected.
You will get free classics books or books out of copyright on many sites. Popular, current, still in copyright books have to be purchased or borrowed from the library. Anywhere offering you free books that are current/popular/newly released are what is referred to as torrent copies. [not legal]
