@snowstone: There is a problem with the communications between Windows XP and the Kobo devices. But, not all setups. I have an old WinXP laptop that works perfectly. And where it hasn't worked, connect the ereader to a Win7 machine, even a slow netbook, and it works

The problem seems to happen when accessing the database on the device. This is why it shows from calibre, but not when using the device as an MSD. Someone has reproduced he problem without using calibre. Because of this, it might be something to do with doing lots of small changes to a large file.
