While I agree in backups in general and that's always been the thing to do with eBooks in the past with places like Fictionwise or Books on Board IMO B&N, Amazon & Kobo, while they may not outright say it, are implying that your books will be available from their cloud at all times. They, along with other cloud based services (comics, movies, music, etc.), almost encourage folks in the fact that they don't need to worry about backups and that their stuff will be available to re-download wherever they want it (& in many cases actually making backups requires one to do things that may not be legal). I'm not saying don't back up by any means, everyone absolutely should, but folks who are newer to the ebook game aren't necessarily thinking they need to have backups since the providers heavily imply they'll keep a copy for them.
