How do you get references to point back to old page?

So I have text in HTML with references that I converted to ePub with Calibre. Everything looks fine. There's a ton of text at the beginning and a References section at the end. I was able to hyperlink the in-text reference (superscript 1, etc) to the appropriate listing in References.

I read this exclusively on the ipad (it's just for me), so in the ipad they have a back link at the bottom that takes me back to the page I just came from. Is there a different method of going back to the original page? My references are list as numbered references. Not sure if there's an ipad specific "url link" that will take it back. Sometimes the same reference is mentioned more than once in the text, so I can't simply give each text-reference an ID in the <a> tag, and have each reference link to that.

Thank you for any insight.
