How on earth was anyone supposed to know to do that? The instructions say nothing about force quitting anything.
So I tried rebooting the iPad just now, because I was worried that the backup might still be sitting around waiting to be restored, and I might end up with duplicate books or something. It turned out to be even worse: the phantom backup was restored and
my existing library was thrown away without so much as an "are you sure?", so all the books I had loaded since installing the new version vanished into thin air and I had to reload them from Calibre.
Let's just say I'm not going to be recommending Marvin to anybody.
