Depends on just how badly you "Brick" it -
As long as it will still allow you to place an update file on USB storage, you can restore it with the Amazon provided 5.4.2 update file.
But if you "Brick" it worse than that -
There is no way known (yet) of putting it into USB downloader mode **WITHOUT** using the serial port.
So start out your project in a safe manner -
Get your serial port connection working;
Enter U-boot;
Load BIST;
Use those commands to load your experimental software to ram and run it from there.
**Never**, **Ever**, flash experimental software unless you have JTAG access to the device (you don't).
