Sorry, I wasn't being purposely reluctant to provide metadata. I just wasn't sure what exactly was required and inexperience with calibre resulted in a rather vague response. I've attached the opf file for one of the books in the series that is causing problems to see if this gives any clues.
As an experiment I added two new series of books to calibre, sync'd them with my kindle and found that the plugboard template worked perfectly so it would appear to be a problem with just the Horus Heresy series I mentioned (to clarify, the opf file is from this series).
Thanks for your assistance so far. Hopefully I can sort this and get a little more adventurous with my library management as a result of any lessons learnt.
