I would recommend against trying the old charger, if the other charger works. You have a very rare-sounding issue and two broken Kindles right after the first charge REALLY suggest to me it is the charger or charging cable that is frying them. I haven't heard anyone else having this issue, so it isn't something common...

If I were you I would get rid of the old charger if a new charger works, or limit the use of the old charger to only those devices you know work with it.
that's the engineer in me that wants to get to the bottom of the issue. I told the amazon rep that i was willing for them to receive the old kindles and tell me what was wrong before sending me a replacement, but they said they don't get feedback on returned items.

You're probably right. I'll go use a different charger.
