Just curious, why would you risk it again?
Personal opinion:
I would recommend against trying the old charger, if the other charger works. You have a very rare-sounding issue and two broken Kindles right after the first charge REALLY suggest to me it is the charger or charging cable that is frying them. I haven't heard anyone else having this issue, so it isn't something common...
If I were you I would get rid of the old charger if a new charger works, or limit the use of the old charger to only those devices you know work with it.
