The best way to describe it is if you hold the ereader (or book) at an angle so you can see ahead of you several metres.
You then set your vision so you're looking around the ereader in addition to the text on the ereader.

You don't see much in the way of detail beyond the ereader, but any movement you notice right away and any changes to the footpath as well, such as a crossing or something.
