Second this. The Lies of Locke Lamora (book one of the series) is good, swashbuckling fun, the plotting is terrific, and it builds up to a very exciting finale. Just started book 2 today in fact, only 20 pages in, but Lynch has again hooked me.

Would also second the Prydain series by Lloyd Alexander, it is excellent.

I don't read much fantasy but I really want to read more, there are some worthy recommendations here. I did start to read the George R.R. Martin books. Really enjoyed the first, but I got bored halfway through the second one. It seemed to be a merry-go-round of political machinations and not much was actually happening (just my opinion).
