I did the same with Christmas and Birthday gifts for my son too, especially since we noticed that the bags and wrapping/bows were more exciting for him to play with. Art supplies and books were the next most used along with legos. The large legos were perfect and we gradually moved to the smaller ones. I still have 3 big 18 gallon storage tubs in the garage of his old legos, that he wanted saved; so, I guess they have special memories for him. Oh, stamps and ink with lots of paper were favorites too. He would help decorate bags that we used for gift bags. Seriously, I found simple things were used and enjoyed more than expensive toys.
