If you really want to get them motivated, get a hamster and a Habitat Ball, the sort that you can put the hamster into and let roll around on the floor. The hamster doesn't get frightened (despite my original way of thinking) as it has no point of reference that cats might be a threat. The hamster will often roll towards the cats to investigate. Usually scares the cats! You can find several Youtube vids of this.
