Stuck with the Amazon ecosystem in what way? I have no idea about the rootability of the HDX's, but they allow for the sideloading of apps so one can easily add the Nook & Kobo apps, not to mention third party reading apps some of which are in the Amazon app store last I checked. For video you have not only Amazon, but Netfilx, Flixster & Hulu+ available and the Vudu app sideloads just fine. Totally agree the the HDX 8.9 is amazing, it's definitely on my short list of possible tablets (not that the Nexus 7.2 is bad or anything, it's on the list too).
