Two other good e-reader apps where you can test those references are Moon+ Reader and Mantano.
Unfortunately, some books just aren't well formatted. References look as if they should work, but the hyperlinks are not there, or are badly formatted. Then nothing can be done, it has nothing to do with your device, and the book's publisher must be blamed for sloppiness.
