I use Word 2007 and convert .docx files using Calibre. I haven't noticed any significant problems with either epub or mobi. Calibre will accept .docx files directly and then it's just a matter of choosing what format you want as output. I can't think of any reason to convert to PDF first, in fact the end product (epub or mobi) may suffer as a result.
