My wife and some other musicians just did a benefit concert for the local Hospice Society and raised over $800 after paying for the costs to run it. There was a silent auction involved.
Other ideas:
1. Make sure that all your library staff has easy access to donation receipts and know how to take donations. Our local library fails this test every time my wife tries to make a donation.
2. Get people/groups/businesses to sponsor book types - A local hardware store could contribute funds to increase the do-it-yourself books in the library. A local crafts store could donate to get more arts and crafts books. This is a win-win as people buy more supplies after reading books like these. For a larger donation, put up signs acknowledging the gift. Expand this to every type of book.
3. Have a local chef come in and cook and give a cooking lesson and do a wine and food tasting event.
