You did not mention "which" "VM".
What tells you that the device **is not** in USB downloader mode?
That you did not mention.
The other tools that you tried, where you running those from the KUBRICK command line?
The tool builds that are on the KUBRICK disk or other builds?
What is the output of lsusb -vv when you think it is not in USB downloader mode?
If you past the entire output, please wrap it in spoilers.
