I would save the image thing as a last resort as it doesn't seem that an upgrade caused the problem?

To repeat myself and others(sorry as you have probably done all this)

push slider and hold for at least 30 seconds 3 times.
plug into PC (try different port and cable)
You are already charging so if this doesn't work try and let it discharge, helping it along by pushing button, poking screen etc.

The fact that the lights come on seems to indicate it is not fried, just doing something bizarre.

Never hurts to clean the screen/bezel, a little thing stuck in the bezel could cause a problem. I have had the screen unresponsive when a little piece of something was in the bezel at the bottom.

If you do open it, try deleting the books first with a card reader before doing the image download thing.
