The Gen3 is a great device. I recently saw one for the first time and I was impressed. I have had the Sony for almost 2 years and it has kept me company on many long flights. Even shorter domestic Washington-LA jumps are no problem. I keep about 20 to 30 books in reserve on the unit and it still has over 1/2 of the internal memory available.
Like you, I am waiting for the PLI unit and have great hopes for it when it is released.
For newspapers I use Calibre for capturing the feeds of many newspapers and magazines. With the recent extensions he has added allow making ePub files that can easily be turned into Mobi files for reading on the Gen3. (We still don't know what formats will be supported on the PLI reader.)
