I'm thinking that it's more likely that the kids don't get Veterans Day and Columbus Day off is due to the fact that businesses don't give those days off so it creates childcare problems.
I used to love the month of November when I was in school - because I wasn't there much. We got Election Day, Veterans Day, two days off for the Teachers Convention, and two days off for Thanksgiving.
And besides getting the week after Christmas and Easter off, we also got the Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur off. Not to mention Columbus Day, Washington's Birthday, Lincoln's Birthday (this was before the combined Presidents Day, and MLK Day) and Memorial Day. Winters were also colder, so there was usually about at least an additional four snow days off. Not to mention half-days for this, that, and the other.
Life was good in my public school.
(of course, school lasted until almost the last week of June)
