Nook has both shelves and folder view (called My Files). It shows pretty book cover images in the regular library and shelves. When you do the folder view it shows a generic file icon.

If you buy the older model (black color) then it has an SD card slot for expanded storage. If you buy a newer model (white color), then there is no SD card and you are limited to only 500MB of storage for your own books. That equates to several hundred. B&N reserves the rest of the space for purchases from them.

You can drag and drop files by USB to the device. No need for calibre if you don't want to use it.
