Sure, you can put your shelved books either on a card or on the device's main memory. It's as simple as choosing the one or the other in the dropdown on Calibre when you're sending your books to the Kobo. I sideload all my books, and that's what I'm talking about, not books bought directly from Kobo and loaded on to the device from them.

The shelving system takes a little while to set up properly, but it's not difficult if you follow the instructions in the thread step-by-step. After that it's very simple to use.
