..it ended on a cliffhanger. Destiny of Ninefingers is not sealed and we don't get to know whether he's alive or not until Joe writes the new trilogy. That being said, I'm pretty sure he is. Story can go on since Bayaz is still in the game, along with Glokta and Jezal. Not to mention Ferro. So, yup, name of the game is wait and see.
Yes, I get that part. But I think being in the same universe does not mean you won't be able enjoy that story as much.

For me the trilogy got the best possible end. The loose ends can be extension of the story in the same universe but it doesn't rob you off the satisfaction of having reached the end of the trilogy.
