The first dedicated ereader was the Kobo touch.
A colleague had a Kindle and I had a play with it and compared to a Kobo Touch another colleague had.
I went with the Kobo touch because of the following:
1: I hated the kindle keyboard and preferred the Kobo touch screen.
2: The kobo touch had an SD card slot to sideload, which I really wanted, so there would be no restriction on how much I could store.
3: The Kobo supported epub, so I wouldn't be locked into one format.
I've not bought a Kindle and have stuck with Kobo since then (now have a kobo Glo).
It's not a brand loyalty thing tho, it's just the Kobo ereaders provide what I'm looking for in an ereader.
