You can add any filetype as a calibre record, but will need some type of plugin to get calibre to sync the APNX and PHL.

I asked Kovid to integrate such an option but he said wontfix because he feels it's not worth it.

If you create such a plugin, I'd be happy to hear it. Or maybe someday I will...

There is a built-in feature to generate approximated APNX's on the fly while sending to Kindle, but not to use Amazon's saved APNX.
