We call it "hawking" (nothing to do with the bird, of course - again, it's the noise).
I remember when we got our first Airedale, Monty. When he arrived, and slept in our room at night in the crate, we were getting up all night with "Is he breathing...he doesn't sound like he's breathing...no, it's okay, there he goes". Eventually we learnt to sleep through it.
At our last house, Monty would always move off the carpet and onto the glass at the top of the stairs to hawk something up - a very considerate boy, he was.
